Is it insulting to call a Filipino in the Philippines a FOB?

Published on Feb 8th, 2010 under Buying Watches.By zalman1

Like, yeah, like I was you know at Starbucks yesterday, and like, the cashier was like thinking she was sosyal and everything and was like totally giving me like a ‘tude. All the while she was like speaking english, I couldn’t help but like laugh coz her accent was soooooooooooooooo bad, like bad bad, like it made my ears bleed, but not really, but more like a small animal crawled in my ears and started like screeching like ZOMG, sooooooooooo annoying, yeah.

Anyhow, like she like handed me my change, still with a major ‘tude, I said to her, "Oooh, girl, you need to lay off the english, ‘coz english does not like FOBs like you—and you haven’t gotten on the boat yet and you’re already a FOB." And like I laughed and laughed until I got my venti double mocha frap. And you know I was like watching them nasty FOBs behind the counter making my drink just to make sure they didn’t like spit in my frap!

…only if they even understood what it meant.

it is, if you are a filipino. but they will take it as a compliment if you are a foreigner, accept it with a wide smile and a thank you.

It depends if she knows what FOB means.hahaha. And all people have accent. Even filipino who works in call center have Philippine accent. It’s probably better if you just say she have bad english.

FOB is a term for Filipinos who were born and raised in the Philippines but moved to America (Fresh Off Boat). Fil-Am used to be a term for half-Filipino half-American, but now it’s a general term for people of Filipino descent who were born and raised in America.

i wouldn’t be insulted because it simply doesn’t apply to me. i don’t have to go to America to live well and my English is very good. but i’m also not surprised if there are Filipinos who get that treatment from Fil-Ams because it’s somewhat true.

most of the Filipinos who move to US don’t have Spanish or Chinese descent aren’t as educated or as good looking as they are so these stupid Fil-Ams who think their Pacific Islander get on their case as if they don’t belong in America.

Fil-Am or FOB, their only purpose in my life is for them to have boys that play basketball so i can watch them play in the UAAP and PBA someday.

About as insulting as somebody trying to act like a valley girl . Time for YOU to grow up.

It’s your attitude that needs attention. Stop being so pretentious and stop criticizing others.

FOB would not be insulting to most native filipinos because they may not know what that is and it is not a term used frequently here.Even if it would be widely known, I think it is not appropriate for the culture here. The most insulting term equivalent to it is probinsyano (country boy) or taga bundok or taga bukid (mountain man)for those in the "provincial cities", Besides, who knows how this FOB (fresh off the boat or fresh off board) originated…from the boat people or refugee of Vietnam or earlier as applied to those who just arrived in America from any part of the globe whether they be Nigeria, Switzerland, England or the Philippines who used the shipping lanes.
About the accents, we all have our accents. It would be funny only to those who have not encountered or traveled to different culture. That is why Jose Rizal stated that traveling is a good form of education to let us know we are all equal in some terms. And who knows that cashier has a visayan accent but she can speak nihonggo, german and french.
Let us not be critical to people on our way up, cuz we might meet them again on our way down.
We point our finger at them while the other 3 finger is pointing at us. When this nasty habits of ours catch us. It would really make us shiver with shame for getting a doze of our own medicine.

Everyone has accent depending on your native tongue , And English speakers are no exception – and it is well understood by educated and well traveled people. Only people who never traveled laugh at accents of other people.

By the way, I think you are also pretending…

If you knew this girl personally, it would have been ok.

But it’s like calling an African-American a nig***, and you’re white. Or somebody calling you white trash and you ARE a white trash. You would probably take it as a compliment.

Try being nice to the person serving your food/drinks. You will never know what they can do to your beverage.

no if I own a boat…..I WOULDNT BE INSULTED……And i arrived from L.A. via PAL…..not a boat…the owners of cebu pacific though are boat people. mwa ha ha ha…..

in youre case about the girl with an atittude from starbucks…..thats common in the philippines they think their sosy when they work at some coffee shop….the only time i go to starbucks in the philippines is when i have to pee…i dont buy expensive fancy coffee, and ridiculously priced cookies, i only drink starbucks, when its free or someone will pay for it. and coffee makes me jittery.

Could you do me a favor….can you order a chocolate mousse cake , but deliberately pronounce it as chocolate MOUSE….please pick a Pa sosy girl with an attitude not the polite and kind ones….i love it when the PA SOSYAL ONE’s gets berated by customers….

You know what, it really wouldn’t hurt you if you were nice… try it sometimes…

As for the "FOB-fresh off the boat" issue, most Filipinos dont understand that, and most dont care about it, they are too busy living their lives..

As far as I know, its mostly the Indians who get insulted when they are called "FOB", the other races and nationalities pretty much dont care about it…

The issue here is your attitude…anybody who sticks their nose in other peoples business just goes to show how shallow-minded they are…

Be nice…

I think the Starbucks you went to made a mistake in hiring someone who can’t speak good English language. Sue the establishment for that and get every cents they have for making you annoyed.

can you like pick an answer already ‘coz there are like, too many good answers here and you’re like, not picking one yet. they are like waiting who has the best answer and you’re soooooo slowwwuh.

To answer your question: Yes it is insulting.

Just my 2 Cents…It’s not how you pronounce your English…its the intellectual content and how you structure it that counts. There are plenty of Americans here that speak perfect English and there are also lots of them that are as dumb as a door knob. There are also foreign diplomats, doctors and Politicians who speak broken English or with the accent, but have a Masters Degree or a PHD.

But if it makes you feel better as a person that you speak English better than this cashier at Starbucks…so be it.

If you’re a Filipina who is residing in the U.S. then you’re just as pretentious and snobbish as you can be.

Are your parents FOB, too? Otherwise have you been born and raise here in the Philippines you might just end up working as a sales person in the department store and won’t be able to afford to buy a stupid over rated star bucks coffee.

Couldn’t figure out heads or tails from what you said… I think that FOB has something to do with post office or shipping – no? Anyway, please learn English before spouting off. (By the way, I DO live in the Philippines).
